Q & A for outdoor LCD

1. How to select the best solution for outdoor panel mount LCD kiosk Project?
Questions
I have one question regarding the environment the monitor can be mounted in, on the datasheet its stated that it can operate in temperature range 0c-50c, but what if its mounted like in the picture where the screen is outside and the rest inside, the temperature outside can drop to -10c in some places. Is that going to be a problem?

Answers:
We are not concern about the cold that much, because mostly the high brightness LCD is LED backlight where is the operating temp, could cold start at -20C. If you have the screen on, it itself is a heater. So the -10C is not a big issue. But the real issue is temp contrast because you can't have a screen stay cold at night and suddenly hot under the sun if facing east in the morning. So you might consider heater to keep the internal temperature stable.

But the heat is the issue during the hot day, if the temperature goes up to 35C above and under the direct sunlight (Like Facing west when sun). It will create an isotropic stage, please see below link.

We recommend using wide temp display and air curtain like this product to prevent isotropic blackout.

2. The screen would be mounted in a Drive Thru Restaurants weather-proof stand/box with the screen exposed?
Questions
ECH1500HB-SIP: Rugged Completely Sealed Full IP66/NEMA4X Stainless Steel Chassis/Surface Mount, 15" LCD monitor , 1024 x 768, 1000 , The screen would be mounted in a weather-proof stand/box with the screen exposed.

Answers:
For outdoor drive thru, you need a water proof enclosures and super high brightness. When the viewer is 3-5 ft from the display, 1000nits should be bright enough. If there is a touchscreen added at the front, we will recommend upgrade the brightness from 1000 to 1500nits, because any additional layers will decrease 10-15% brightness from the LCD, not mentioned glare as well. Most of the case issue happen when the LCD is overheating, because stainless steel enclosures is completely sealed there isn't much of moving air inside and out the enclosrues. Just conversion cooling will no help when it is a hot day like 90F above, it will be worse when the screen is facing West at 3-5pm sunset time. This will caused the isotropic Stage, other meaning the screen will completely black out. There are few solution for this, first we can use a wide surface temperature LCD most standard LCD rated at 50C, but some of industrial grade panel can substain up to 85C. But remember your overall enclosures still need to maintain at 50C. 2nd you can find the right location avoiding direct sunlight or adding a small hood on top of the display, this will prolong the long time of the display in the same time can avoiding the dislay exposed to the sunlight all day where it builds up the heat inside, when comes to afternoon is already overheat.

3rd solution is you can have a outdoor enclosures with a cut out at the front panel where you can mount the panel mount LCD into this enclosures. If this is the case you can try the YPM1500IPHBWT. The advantage is there is much more moving air inside the enclosures with hood on top will prevent overheating, plus this panel mount display already have wide temp and air curtain at front for cooling. But there is some work to do for cutting out the front panel for inserting the LCD. Since you have the cut out, this YPM display will comes a gasket for sealing off the back of the LCD to theh panel for water and dust proof.

4th solution if you have more room where you can increase the LCD size to 22". Our Suntronics brand outdoor LCD has U2200L has the following features:
http://suntroniclcd.com/DataSheet/DataSheet_U2200L.pdf

22"High Brightness LCD with Backlight (Landscape only) and IP54 metal enclosures(Front and Back), IP54 Bottom, 1680 x 1050, Brightness 1200nits, Contrast Ratio 2000:1,110-220V, Video input DVI and VGA. Unit weight 18kg/40lbs, Operating Temp 5F to 110F, Metal Enclosures AR Glass. (Optional add heater reach to -22F). One(1) Year Return to Depot Warranty. Max. Power consumption is 90 Watts

This choice because it has high brightness, air convection coolign with fan filter including the air curtian front. Since this display is not consumption a lot of power, therefore there is less chance to overheating.
